Biodiesel plant ground broken

GREENFIELD - Proponents of alternative energy had a glimpse of the green pastures that lie ahead this week as Northeast Biodiesel broke ground on a facility that will produce clean fuel for heating and transportation from used grease and vegetable oil.

The 6,600-square-foot plant in Greenfield Industrial Park will create 15 jobs, generate $45,000 a year in taxes for Greenfield and pump out 1.75 million gallons of biodiesel fuel in its first year of operation. The new business is owned by Co-op Power, an independent corporation founded in 2005 and owned by 375 members. Lynn M. Benander, Co-op Power's Chief Executive Officer, said Tuesday's ground-breaking was thrilling.
